Established in 1992, the Galisteo Volunteer Fire and Rescue District, a district of Santa Fe County Fire Department, provides fire and emergency medical services to Galisteo, including the Ranchitos subdivision, and a large portion of the Galisteo Basin. At its fire station, located at 39 Avenida Vieja next to the Community Center, the GVFR has five response vehicles, including an engine, a mini pumper, a water tender, a brush truck, and an ambulance. The GVFR District assists and receives mutual aid from other agencies in and around Santa Fe County including Bureau of Land Management, New Mexico State Forestry, U.S. Forest Service, Bernalillo County Fire Department, Torrance County Fire Department, San Miguel County Fire Department, as well as other Santa Fe County districts.
With improvements in the local community water system, construction of the new fire station, hours of training and certification of its responders and members, and community support, the GVFR District improved its Insurance Services Office (ISO) rating from an initial 9/10 to its current 5/5Y. (An ISO rating is a score given to fire departments by the Insurance Services Office that reflects how prepared a community is for fires. ISO scores can affect homeowners’ insurance premiums.)
The GVFR currently has 8 firefighters, 2 EMT-B, 1 firefighter in training, and 9 support members. Firefighters are trained to respond to wildland, swift water, and extrication incidents. Volunteer firefighter and EMTs positions are first interviewed by Chief Moya and then require formal Santa Fe County Fire Department applications, interviews, and training. Interested auxiliary members are also interviewed by the Chief and 501c-3 President, then go through an application process at the County. GVFR support members assist with administrative duties, station and apparatus maintenance, landscaping, as well as community outreach and events.
